It was about a month ago that Brooks Koepka called out Matthew Wolff for quitting.

“I mean, when you quit on your round, you give up and stuff like that, that’s not competing,” Koepka said to Sports Illustrated. “I’m not a big fan of that. You don’t work hard. It’s very tough. It’s very tough to have even like a team dynamic when you’ve got one guy that won’t work

Koepka is the captain of the LIV Golf team Smash GC and he was sending a clear message to Wolff.

Maybe that lit a spark.

On Friday in the first round of the LIV Golf Greenbrier event, Wolff shot a 9-under 61, carding eight birdies and an eagle with just one bogey to take a two-shot lead heading into the 54-hole, no-cut weekend.

David Puig and Harold Varner III shot 63s and are tied for second.

Wolff started on the eighth hole in the shotgun start and promptly birdied the 214-yard par-3 hole. He later went birdie-eagle-birdie-birdie on Nos. 11 through 15.

The Greenbrier is the first LIV event in a month. It’s the 10th event of the 2023 season and the first pro golf event at the Old White course since the PGA Tour left there in 2019.

The circuit next week heads to Trump Bedminster in New Jersey. Four of the five remaining events are in the United States.
